Want two scoops? Can’t be the same!

When you think or marriage inequality, you don’t often think of ice cream. But Ben and Jerry’s in Australia is bringing Ice Cream to the discussion.

Marriage inequality around the globe is still a pretty big issue. While it may be legal in the US, the rest of the world is still fighting for equality. Just this week Taiwain, was the first country in all of Asia to legalize gay marriage. It is still a struggle in some countries.  Even though most people may be in agreement with gay marriage.

For instance, in Australia 72 percent of people are in agreement with gay marriage. So Ben and Jerry’s in Australia decided to create a new rule to bring attention to the struggle: At all Ben and Jerry’s stores in Australia, you are NOT allowed to get two of the same flavors of ice cream in the same bowl.

If two of the same people can’t get marriage, neither can your Ice Cream!

Their website states: “We are banning two scoops of the same flavor and encouraging our fans to contact their MPs to tell them that the time has come – make same sex marriage legal! Love comes in all flavours!”

Some have criticized Ben & Jerry’s for using the cause as a way to increase sales. While a possibility, B&J’s long activist history makes me think this is for the good. In the world where Delta and UBER can loose market share over one action by accident, or when the world would creates backlash for a Kylie Jenner Pepsi ad, it wouldn’t make sense for B&J to risk this type of publicity unless it was willing to risk its bottom line.

But despite the politics and the controversy, this cause involves Ice Cream. So let’s eat a couple scoops in celebration!
